CHAPTER TWELVE:

It was mid-afternoon before we heard another knock at the door. The sun was shining brightly on our roof charging up our electrical supply. Sunny days also heated up the interior of our home to an uncomfortable level. I had set the thermostat on eighty-two, and the air conditioner had just kicked on for the third time. I was worried that one day one of the units outside beside the building would start clanging. I would then need to repair it so as not to draw attention or disconnect that unit. Just the current hum of the machinery was enough to alert nearby people to our presence.

I was getting used to keeping the phone in my pocket, or Riley's, at all times so that we could keep an eye on the camera feed. Every fifteen minutes or so I would pull it out and have a look. I literally watched the three forms slowly approach our home from the direction of theirs next door. They were carefully dragging a tarp that had been well tied up. I assumed that it was full of meat from the recently killed deer. Venison they called it.

John and Corinne were pulling the cargo with ease, while Stella followed holding two rifles. She wasn't carrying them by the hand grips, though. I had to assume that she was not skilled with their use, only toting them for the other two to take if they spotted trouble. She glanced around nervously as they walked, obviously uncomfortable with the task that she had been assigned.

"Greetings, neighbor," I said merrily as I opened the large heavy door that was now much too fancy for a boarded-up building. Riley and Jada were nearby with their pistols ready as well, but I didn't expect any trouble. There was no longer any reason to make a show of strength.

"Greetings to you, too," John replied, slightly thrown off by my friendly welcome. "I've returned with the meat, and Corinne, as promised. How are we going to do this?"

"I see the two rifles. Are there any other weapons?"

"We all have pocket-knives, if those count. I'd rather not leave our stuff outside this time, if that's alright with you."

"I understand," I replied as I swung the door open wide. "Let Stella set the two rifles inside the door here. You can hold onto your knives, I think."

"Don't let them drag in any blood, Mason," Alexa urged me. The girls had done a great job keeping the place clean since our occupation. Gaining the meat would be worth a little mess in my mind, but not if it could be avoided.

"I think the blood is well contained, Alexa," John replied as he entered with Corinne, dragging the plastic bundle cautiously across the doorstep. "There might be a little dirt on the bottom of the tarp."

"I'm sure it's fine," I answered.

"Let's see how much of a mess it makes before you drag the whole thing into the kitchen," Alexa insisted, hurrying over to take a look.
